James studied at Birkirkara Primary School, St. Aloysius College and St. Aloysius College Sixth Form. He pursued his studies at the University of Malta, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) with European Studies in 2006, the Diploma of Notary Public (N.P.) in 2007 and Doctor of Laws (LL.D) in 2009.
In his initial career, he undertook a traineeship with a private company specialising in EU affairs which was followed by another legal traineeship in the legal and contracts department of an ICT government agency.
Following his graduation as notary public in 2007, he undertook notarial practice with a notarial firm in Malta, following which he was conferred with the warrant to practise as Notary Public in Malta and another warrant to practise as Commissioner for Oaths.
In 2009, he set up his own private notarial practice, operating from an office in the centre of Birkirkara, initially as a sole practitioner and eventually founding the firm James Grech & Associates (Notaries Public). During these years, James has gained considerable experience in all aspects of the notarial profession.
For a number of years, he was also actively involved in the organisation of various law-related courses and general legal education.
As notary public, his main area of interest is civil law with a special focus on promise of sales, contracts of sale, succession law, property law and contract law.
Since 2019, James is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta (Faculty of Laws) lecturing ‘Introduction to Notarial Law and Notarial Archives’, and occasionally involved in the correction of examination papers of other notarial study-units.
James is a member of the Notarial College.
Since 2022, James is also a member of the Notarial Council of Malta.
James is fluent in Maltese, English and Italian.
